Still enamoured with Utrecht

Well, the plans are in the works: Depending on the feasibility of me getting a short-term social security number, I may very well be coming back to Utrecht to work in January.

It's too good an opportunity to pass up, really. My friends are here, with a perfectly good spare room and a large apartment, situated in a beautiful, romantic old-world city, and I may be able to work here.

The tough bit is the social security (SOFI) number. I may have to prove my status as a resident of Utrecht, and that might prove difficult as a short-term (and potentially illegal) subletter. Tomorrow I will venture down to the employment office and pepper them with questions.

I wonder what the city will be like in winter - accounts relate it to Vancouver weather-wise, which doesn't sound too bad really, but I'm also thinking about how prone I would be to get on a bike (the main form of transportation here, as far as I can tell) if it's 0 degrees and pissing rain. But really, the proximity of everything here is pretty good, and the proximity of Utrecht to pretty much anywhere in Europe is, again, really too good to pass up.

I'm excited. I wonder how far I can stretch my employment bridges before they're burned for me, but really how bad could it be? Maybe it's time I moved on and maybe it's time I started taking advantage of these opportunities I've been giving up in exchange for a steady but really rather dull series of jobs.

Oh, and Port is really cheap here: 3 Euros a bottle! Jeez, why am I even going back to Vancouver?

I certainly haven't forgotten that!

It's windy here today, and wet. I think it's kind of like it will be while we're here in the winter, but it's not too bad...
