A quick one from Montreal
Heyo. So I'm presenting my new-and-improved design tomorrow, and then the work will really begin. The hang was pretty smooth, despite the fact that we were down two crew members, and the guys I'm working closely with seem nice.
I'm a little worried because my choreographer isn't the best at communicating what he wants (and it's not the language barrier, he's like that in French as well I'm told!) and so it will be a bit of a surprise for us all tomorrow when I show him my ideas. The worst case scenario is that I'll have to re-hang and re-focus a bunch of lights. But I guess he liked what I did last time so with any luck I've steered things in the right direction this time.
But hey, I'm in Montreal so what do I have to complain about!? I am quite taken with the city: The rent and food is super-cheap, the people are nice, I actually use the smattering of French I picked up through high school (it still amazes me that I can remember any! I'm such an Anglo).... I think I'll have to come back to stay for a longer period someday. Maybe to retire from my life of crime, like Robert DeNiro did in that film with Edward Norton...
Speaking of films, I just saw "Goodnight and Good Luck," which was quite good. Ah, nothing like a Red Scare film to throw thinly-veiled criticism at the media and the government about recent events. The biggest surprise about the film was that I actually liked George Clooney.
During the previews I saw the movie about Evelyn Glennie which looks great... I'm looking forward to seeing it. When I was working more regularly at the Chan I worked her show. She is super-nice and an amazing percussionist. She made amazingly fluid sounds on the marimba...I never would have expected you could make long tones without the sound of different beats on one. And that's also where I heard my first (and only) snare drum concerto, which was pretty amazing. In the credits for the film I also saw Fred Frith mentioned; I just met him when he performed at the Vancouver New Music Festival! Odd how things connect sometimes.
Anyways, early morning tomorrow so now it's bedtime. Goodnight all!
