xmas eve post

After a week of rest I'm fulfilling a promise I made to myself to post before the new year. :)

Xmas in NYC...commercial madness. We went shopping for some last minute provisions this afternoon and it was like a mosh pit in the grocery store. The thing I never get about this holiday is how it's supposed to be so very peaceful and loving, and yet it whips people up into this materialist frenzy, resulting in everyone being an absolute ass to one another in the shops.

But I guess that's not a terribly original statement, is it? For our part, Caitlin and I have been purposefully low-key this holiday: We got each other one gift, managed to self-gift thanks to xmas sales, and I managed to keep up my xmas tradition of giving to a charity. Since neither of us really got on the whole xmas card thing, we're sending "new year" cards.

The other night, in an effort to keep my little laptop ("The Master") alive for a little while longer (we've been having some issues) I dumped a bunch of photos from my hard drive, some of them dating back to 2001. I found myself hit with a serious bout of homesickness, which was compounded by emails from several far-flung friends asking if I was going to be returning home like they were. While NYC is great and I am really happy to (finally!) be in the same city as my girlfriend, I still miss home and everybody there very much.

In non-xmas news, I'm trying to savour the break-time I have from class right now, while at the same time chipping away a little at the holiday assignments. The stress of looming deadlines is starting to reappear already, but I think I'm doing pretty well right now. Our new cat, Vito, is a constant source of amusement and distraction. He was a stray; we found him in our courtyard a few weeks ago and decided to take him in. To be more descriptive, we catnapped him by luring him into a cardboard box and taking him to the vet to get checked out. Turns out he was in pretty good health and only needed some minor maintenance, and now he's transitioning to his new life as a housecat. The big concern initially was allergies: Both Caitlin and I are very allergic to cats, but as luck would have it he's not too bad for us. My eyes are a bit red most of the time but that's not bad considering.

I guess this is turning a bit rambly: I hate not having posted in a while because there's always so much to write about and I can never figure out a structure... Maybe a quick list of stats:

Number of plays read since September: 32
Number of shows seen since September: 20
Best show: Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera
Number of films watched for class: 8
Number of scenes designed for class: 19
Number of designs done for real: 2
Number of full theoretical designs: 2
Number of times I've thought "holy shit, I'm living in New York": approx. 100
Number of minor nervous breakdowns: 2
Number of times I've thought "thank goodness I have such a wonderful, understanding girlfriend": approx. 250

More to come...
